About Stage Wall of the Theatre, Sabratha

The stage wall of the Roman theatre at Sabratha, in western Libya, is a tall backdrop of red-gold sandstone with three rows of columns, niches and doorways, through which actors once entered. Below it, the front of the stage is carved with reliefs of gods, dancers and scenes from plays. Italian archaeologists rebuilt the wall in the 1930s from the blocks that had fallen. About 5,000 spectators could sit on the curved stone seats facing it. This photo shows the stage wall glowing in the afternoon sun.

Puzzle tip: start with the columns of the top row, then the arches and doorways below, and the stone floor and the sky last.
