About Stone Faces of the Bayon, Angkor Thom

The Bayon stands at the exact centre of Angkor Thom, the walled city built by King Jayavarman VII around the year 1200. Its towers are carved with more than two hundred huge, calm faces that look out in every direction, and nobody knows for certain whether they show a Buddhist saint or the king himself. Each face is made of many stacked blocks of sandstone, with no mortar between them. The walls below are covered in carvings of battles, markets, fishermen and everyday life in the Khmer Empire.

Puzzle tip: the faces are built from stacked blocks, so match the lines of the stone; the pale sky is quick to finish.
