About Stone Pillars of the Medirigiriya Vatadage

The Vatadage at Medirigiriya, about 30 kilometres north of Polonnaruwa, is one of the best-preserved buildings of its kind in Sri Lanka. A vatadage is a round shrine built to protect a small stupa holding relics; it once had a wooden roof resting on rings of stone pillars. Here three circles of slender granite pillars still stand on a raised platform reached by a stone stairway, with four seated Buddha statues around the stupa inside. The shrine dates from the early medieval period, around the seventh or eighth century. This photo shows the pillars against the sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the circles of tall pillars, then fill the platform below and the open sky last.
