Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Sigiriya is a great rock rising about 200 metres above the jungle. In the fifth century, King Kashyapa built a palace on its flat top, reached through a gateway shaped like a giant lion. The island also holds many ancient statues of the Buddha carved from solid rock, and in Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth keeps what is believed to be a tooth of the Buddha.
In the cool hills, tea has been grown since the nineteenth century, and Ceylon tea is known around the world. Near the town of Ella, trains cross the Nine Arch Bridge, built from stone and brick in the middle of the jungle.
