About The Chalk Cliffs of Étretat from Above

The cliffs of Étretat are part of the Alabaster Coast, a long line of white chalk cliffs that runs along the English Channel in Normandy. The chalk is made of the tiny shells of sea creatures that settled on the bottom of a warm sea about ninety million years ago, and its dark bands are layers of flint. Paths on top of the cliffs lead between fields and a golf course to viewpoints over the sea, but the edges are crumbling, so walkers must keep back. In this photo the striped white cliffs drop into turquoise water, with the green grass of the clifftop above.

Puzzle tip: start with the white cliffs and the green clifftop, then the turquoise shallows, and finish with the deep blue sea and the sky.
