About Thor’s Hammer and the Bryce Amphitheatre

Bryce Canyon in southern Utah is not really a canyon but a row of huge natural amphitheatres cut into the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. They are filled with hoodoos, tall thin spires of orange, pink and white rock. Hoodoos form as snow melts into cracks during the day and freezes at night, slowly breaking the rock apart. Thor's Hammer, near Sunset Point, is one of the best known, a spire topped by a heavier block. This photo shows it at the left, with the amphitheatre stretching away behind.

Puzzle tip: start with Thor's Hammer and the edge of the cliff, then sort the hoodoos by their orange and pale shades.
