About York Minster, the Heart of Viking Jorvik

York was founded by the Romans, and in 866 a great Viking army captured it. Under the name Jorvik it became the capital of a Viking kingdom in northern England, a busy trading town where craftsmen made combs, leather shoes and jewellery, until the last Viking king, Eric Bloodaxe, was driven out in 954. In the 1970s archaeologists digging at Coppergate found Viking houses and streets so well preserved in the wet soil that even shoes and seeds survived. York Minster, built between 1220 and 1472, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe. This photo shows its towers rising above old brick houses and gardens.

Puzzle tip: start with the pale towers of the cathedral, then the red brick houses and green trees, and the cloudy sky last.
