About Eritrea
The land was part of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, and the port of Adulis traded with Rome and India. Italy made Eritrea a colony in 1890 and built Asmara into a city of modern architecture, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. After decades of struggle Eritrea became independent from Ethiopia in 1993.
You can put together the Orthodox cathedral of Enda Mariam and St Joseph's Cathedral in Asmara, a steam train on a mountain viaduct and a Mallet locomotive, the town of Keren from above and its lively camel market.
