Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Persian kings, founded by Darius the Great about 2,500 years ago. Its stone stairways are carved with long processions of people bringing gifts from all corners of the empire.
Isfahan is known for Naqsh-e Jahan Square, one of the largest city squares in the world, surrounded by mosques and a palace, and for its old bridges over the river, which glow at night. In Shiraz, the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque fills with coloured light each morning as the sun shines through its stained glass windows. In Yazd, tall wind catchers on the rooftops have cooled houses for centuries without electricity.
