Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America, and in the middle of it rises Ometepe, an island formed by two volcanoes joined by a narrow neck of land. On the lake shore, Granada, founded in 1524, is one of the oldest cities built by Europeans on the American mainland, with a bright yellow cathedral on its main square.
León, once the rival capital, is known for its colourful streets and its huge white cathedral. On the Pacific, San Juan del Sur sits on a curving bay, and far out in the Caribbean, the Corn Islands offer quiet beaches and coral reefs.
