Turquoise Water in an Omani Canyon
Nizwa was once an important centre in the interior, and its fort rises above an oasis of date palms. Muscat, the capital, stretches between rocky hills and the sea.
The Wahiba Sands are shaped by wind, while wadis such as Wadi Shab hold pools of water between steep rock walls. On the flat central coast around Al Khaluf, shallow lagoons and pale sand create striking changes of colour.
