The city's name comes from Singapura, meaning lion city, and its symbol, the Merlion, is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish that spouts water into Marina Bay. Across the bay, Gardens by the Bay is filled with giant tree-like structures called Supertrees, covered in living plants.
At the airport, Jewel Changi holds the Rain Vortex, the tallest indoor waterfall in the world, pouring about 40 metres from a glass roof. In the older districts, rows of pastel-coloured shophouses show how the city looked a century ago. By the water, the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum glows at night below the towers of the business district.
