About Colourful Shophouses, Singapore

Singapore's shophouses are narrow two- or three-storey buildings with a shop on the ground floor and living space above, built mostly between the 1840s and the 1960s. Many are decorated with bright paint, patterned tiles and carved details, mixing Chinese, Malay and European styles. The pastel Peranakan houses of Joo Chiat and Katong are among the most photographed.

Puzzle tip: each house has its own colour, which makes the fronts easy to sort; the street comes last.
