About Slovakia
The High Tatras rise steeply on the border with Poland, with sharp granite peaks, glacial lakes and forests where bears, chamois and marmots live. Slovakia is said to have more castles and castle ruins for its size than almost any other country, among them Spiš Castle, one of the largest in Central Europe. Its capital, Bratislava, lies on the Danube, close to both Austria and Hungary.
Spiš Castle covers a whole hilltop in the east, Orava Castle climbs a cliff above its river, and Bojnice was rebuilt as a fairy-tale castle around 1900. In the old mining town of Banská Štiavnica, a Baroque calvary crowns a volcanic hill.
