About Calvary of Banská Štiavnica

The Calvary of Banská Štiavnica is a Baroque pilgrimage site built by the Jesuits between 1744 and 1751 on a volcanic hill above the town. A path lined with small chapels, each telling a part of the story of Christ's Passion, climbs to an upper church with two towers. The town below grew rich from silver and gold mining, and in 1762 it became home to one of the first mining academies in the world. Banská Štiavnica and the old mines around it are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this aerial photo the red and white churches stand on a green hill among forests.

Puzzle tip: the red-and-white churches on the hilltop are the clearest part; the forests and fields need more time.
