About Sulphur Cones of Dallol, Ethiopia

Small cones and chimneys grow around the hot springs of Dallol, built up layer by layer as boiling, salty water bubbles out and dries in the heat. The bright yellow and green comes from sulphur and other minerals, and the water in the little pools is one of the most acidic natural waters on Earth. The landscape changes quickly: springs go quiet and new ones open, so the colours are never the same from one month to the next.

Puzzle tip: the brown cones in the middle stand out from the green, so start there; the bright pools are best sorted by shade.
