About Salt Terraces of Dallol, Ethiopia

Around the springs of Dallol, mineral water spreads out in thin sheets and leaves behind terraces of salt, like steps of white, green and brown. The salt here is part of a layer that is hundreds of metres thick, left by sea water that flooded the Danakil Depression and dried up again and again. Nearby, Afar miners still cut blocks of salt from the flat ground by hand, and camel caravans carry them to the highlands.

Puzzle tip: the white salt in the middle is the brightest part; the brown and green bands help you put the steps in order.
