About Blue Pond near Biei, Hokkaido

The Blue Pond lies near the town of Biei in central Hokkaido, at the foot of the volcanic Tokachi mountains. It is not natural: it formed behind a dam built to protect the area from mudflows after Mount Tokachi erupted in 1988. Minerals from the nearby hot springs, carried by the water, scatter the light so that the pond shines a milky turquoise. Dead larch trees still stand in the water. This photo shows the pond in summer, surrounded by green forest.

Puzzle tip: start with the dead tree trunks standing in the water, then the forest, and fill in the turquoise water last.
