Mount Fuji, 3,776 metres high, is Japan's highest mountain and a sacred symbol of the country; one of the most famous views of it is from the five-storey Chureito Pagoda, especially when cherry trees are in bloom. Kyoto was the imperial capital for more than a thousand years and still has around 1,600 temples.
In Kyoto you can piece together Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion covered in gold leaf, the wooden terrace of Kiyomizu-dera among autumn leaves, the Yasaka Pagoda above old streets and the tunnels of orange torii gates at Fushimi Inari, each one donated by a person or a company. In Tokyo, the red and white Tokyo Tower has been a landmark since 1958, and crowds pour across the famous Shibuya Crossing below walls of glowing screens. In Osaka, the Tsūtenkaku tower rises over the lively old district of Shinsekai.
