About The Castle and Church of Gordes

The stone houses of Gordes seem to grow straight out of the cliff, and many of them stand on old cellars cut into the rock. Below the village, in the countryside, are bories, round huts of dry stone built without any mortar, which farmers used as shelters and storerooms; a whole village of them can be visited nearby. Gordes was badly damaged in the Second World War because it sheltered members of the Resistance, and it was carefully restored afterwards. In this close view the castle and the church tower rise above terraces of houses and cypress trees.

Puzzle tip: start with the castle and the church tower, then the houses and terraces, and finish with the green trees and the sky.
