About The Ochre Cliffs of Roussillon

Around the village of Roussillon in Provence lie some of the largest ochre deposits in the world, formed millions of years ago from sands rich in iron. From the late eighteenth century the yellow, orange and red earth was dug, washed and dried to make pigments for paint, and the industry was at its peak in the early twentieth century. Today a walking trail leads through the old quarries, where tall cliffs in every shade of orange stand among green pines. In this photo a bright orange cliff rises above the forest, with blue hills in the distance.

Puzzle tip: start with the orange cliff and the pines on top, then the green forest, and finish with the blue hills and the sky.
