About The Palace of the Popes in Evening Light, Avignon

For most of the fourteenth century the popes lived not in Rome but in Avignon, and between 1309 and 1377 seven popes in a row ruled the Catholic Church from here. To house them, the Palace of the Popes was built in only about twenty years, and it is the largest Gothic palace in the world. Its massive walls and towers made it look more like a fortress than a residence. Today it is a museum, and its main courtyard becomes a theatre during the famous Avignon Festival every July. In this photo the evening sun turns the stone façade a warm gold.

Puzzle tip: start with the pointed towers and the sunlit façade, then the people in the square, and finish with the clouds and the sky.
