About Gali Ali Beg Waterfall, Kurdistan Region

Gali Ali Beg is a deep canyon in the mountains of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, north-east of Erbil, and its waterfall is one of the best-known sights in the country; it even appears on the Iraqi 5,000-dinar banknote. The canyon carries the Hamilton Road, built between 1928 and 1932 by the New Zealand engineer Archibald Hamilton to link Erbil with the Iranian border through the Zagros Mountains. In spring, when the snow melts, the water pours down most strongly between the rocks and trees.

Puzzle tip: the white water is the brightest part, so start there; the dark rock and the green leaves come next.
