About Monastery on Mount Popa

The monastery on Taung Kalat, a steep volcanic plug about 50 kilometres south-east of Bagan, seems to float above the plains when the morning mist lies below it. Pilgrims climb 777 steps to reach the golden shrines at the top, watched by the many monkeys that live on the rock. Taung Kalat stands at the foot of Mount Popa, an extinct volcano, and the area is the home of the nats, the spirits honoured in Myanmar alongside Buddhism. A festival for the nats is held here every year.

Puzzle tip: the golden shrines on the rock are the centre; the mist and the green forest around them come later.
