About Mud-Walled Buildings of Souq Waqif, Doha

The buildings of Souq Waqif follow the traditional architecture of the Gulf: thick walls rendered with mud and straw that keep the inside cool, small windows and flat roofs where people once slept on hot nights. Wooden poles stick out from the top of the walls; they are the ends of the beams that hold up the roof, made from mangrove or other timber brought by sea. Qatar grew rich from pearling until the 1930s and then from oil and natural gas. In the evening the souq fills with cafés, restaurants and strolling families.

Puzzle tip: the wooden poles along the top of the walls make a clear line to follow; the sky goes last.
