About Krak des Chevaliers on Its Hilltop

Krak des Chevaliers stands on a hill about 650 metres high above the Homs Gap, the pass between the mountains and the plains that once linked the inland cities with the coast. The Knights Hospitaller held the castle from 1142 and gave it two rings of massive walls, one inside the other, with round towers. It held out for more than a century until the Mamluk sultan Baybars took it in 1271. T. E. Lawrence called it perhaps the best preserved and most admirable castle in the world. It has been a World Heritage Site since 2006.

Puzzle tip: the castle walls stand out against the sky; the green slopes below are best sorted by their shades.
