About Waves on the Lava Coast of Sal

Sal is one of the flattest and driest of Cape Verde's ten islands, and its name simply means "salt". It was built by volcanoes millions of years ago and has since been worn down by wind and sea, so only a few old cones still rise above the plains. Along the north-west coast the Atlantic breaks against black lava, filling natural pools such as Buracona, where sunlight sometimes makes a hollow in the rock glow bright blue, a spot known as the Blue Eye. In this photo white waves crash into a lava inlet, with a lone volcanic hill behind.

Puzzle tip: the white foam and the dark lava give strong contrasts; the flat plain and the sky come last.
