About Sand Dunes of Boa Vista

Boa Vista, the easternmost island of Cape Verde, is closest to the African mainland, and its landscape shows it: much of it is covered with sand that the dry harmattan wind has carried across the sea from the Sahara. The best-known dunes form the Viana Desert, not far from the main town of Sal Rei. Boa Vista's long, empty beaches are also one of the most important nesting places in the world for loggerhead sea turtles, which come ashore between July and October. In this photo golden dunes and green shrubs stretch towards bare mountains under a grey sky.

Puzzle tip: the green bushes and the dark mountains are clear landmarks; the smooth sand needs patience.
