About Courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque, Damascus

The Umayyad Mosque in the old city of Damascus was built between 705 and 715 by the caliph al-Walid I, on a site where a Roman temple of Jupiter and then a church of St John the Baptist had stood. A shrine inside is believed to hold the head of John the Baptist, who is honoured by both Christians and Muslims. The walls around its vast marble courtyard still show golden mosaics of rivers, trees and palaces. The Old City of Damascus, one of the oldest cities in the world, has been a World Heritage Site since 1979.

Puzzle tip: the arcades and the golden mosaics are the most detailed parts; the shiny marble floor goes together last.
