About Michelangelo's David, Florence

Michelangelo carved his David from a single block of marble between 1501 and 1504, when he was still in his twenties. The statue, more than five metres tall, shows the young hero just before his fight with Goliath. It stood in front of the Palazzo Vecchio until 1873, when it was moved to the Accademia Gallery to protect it; a copy now takes its place in the square.

Puzzle tip: the white marble has smooth, subtle shading, so look closely at the light and shadow on each piece.
