About The Initiation Well, Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra

The Initiation Well is hidden in the gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, a palace estate in the hills of Sintra, near Lisbon. It was never meant to hold water: it is a tower sunk into the ground, about 27 metres deep, with a spiral staircase and nine landings that are often linked to the nine circles of Dante's Inferno. The estate was built in the early 1900s for the wealthy collector António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, full of symbols from legends and secret societies. In this photo moss-covered arches spiral down into the well.

Puzzle tip: follow the arches round the spiral; the mossy stone walls take the longest.
