About Gravensteen Castle, Ghent

The Gravensteen, the 'Castle of the Counts', stands in the middle of Ghent surrounded by a moat. Count Philip of Alsace built it in 1180, on the site of an older wooden fort, to show his power over the proud and wealthy city. Later it served as a court, a prison and even a cotton mill, and by the late nineteenth century it was so hidden by houses that the city planned to pull it down. Instead it was restored in the 1890s. In 1949 students occupied it in a famous protest against a rise in the price of beer.

Puzzle tip: start with the battlements and towers along the top, then fill the stone walls and the water below.
