About Stepped Street in Valletta

Valletta's grid of straight streets runs up and down the steep back of Mount Sciberras, the ridge on which the city stands. On the steepest slopes the streets turn into long stairways with low, wide steps. A popular story says they were made shallow so that knights in heavy armour could climb them, but they also suited horses and carts. The houses are built of Malta's soft globigerina limestone, which turns a warm honey colour in the sun. This photo looks down a narrow stepped street lined with balconies.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone steps in the middle, then build the house walls and balconies on both sides.
