About Gullfoss from the Air

Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, is where the glacial river Hvítá drops in two steps, about 32 metres in all, into a narrow canyon up to 70 metres deep. It is one of the stops on the Golden Circle, the popular route from Reykjavík that also passes Þingvellir and the geysers of Haukadalur. In the early 20th century there were plans to use the falls for electricity, and according to tradition Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of the farmer who owned the land, fought hard to save them; today they are protected. This aerial photo shows the falls and their mist above the long green canyon.

Puzzle tip: start with the white water of the falls, then the dark canyon walls and the green land along the river.
