About Painted Walls of a Tiébélé House

Tiébélé, in the south of Burkina Faso near the border with Ghana, is a village of the Kassena people, famous for its painted houses. The thick mud walls are decorated by the women of the village with bold patterns in red, black and white, made from coloured earth and stone powder and then polished and sealed. Each pattern has a meaning, from snakes and calabashes to the scales of fish. This photo shows the black and white geometric designs of the royal court.

Puzzle tip: start with the black and white zigzags, then the round house and its thatched roof, and the plants and ground last.
