About Salt Shore of Lake Assal

Lake Assal, in central Djibouti, lies about 155 metres below sea level, the lowest point in Africa. It is also one of the saltiest lakes on Earth, around ten times saltier than the sea, and its shores are crusted with thick white salt, which the Afar people have cut into blocks and carried away by camel caravan for centuries. The lake sits in a hot volcanic landscape where the African and Arabian plates are slowly pulling apart. This photo shows the white salt shore and the turquoise water under a blue sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the white salt crust, then the turquoise water, and the far hills and the sky last.
