About Rock-Hewn Church of Lalibela, Ethiopia

The eleven medieval churches of Lalibela in northern Ethiopia were carved straight down into the solid rock in the 12th and 13th centuries, during the reign of King Lalibela. Each church is a single block of stone, with its doors, windows and columns cut from the living rock. They are still places of worship today, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: the carved walls of the church are the centre; the rock around them comes next.
