About Ash Plume of Tavurvur, Rabaul

Tavurvur is a small but very active cone on the edge of the Rabaul caldera. In 1937 it erupted together with the nearby Vulcan cone and killed more than five hundred people. In 1994 the two volcanoes erupted again and buried much of the town of Rabaul under thick ash; thanks to warnings, almost everyone got away in time, but the provincial capital was moved to Kokopo. Tavurvur has erupted many times since, most recently with a large eruption in 2014. This photo shows a dark, billowing cloud of ash rising beside two green volcanic cones across the bay.

Puzzle tip: start with the two green cones, then the grey ash cloud and the bright blue water and sky.
