About Padar Island in the Dry Season

For much of the year the rains miss this part of Indonesia, and the grass on Padar dries to shades of gold and rust. This dry climate is one reason Komodo dragons survive in the area: they live only on a few islands here and on the coast of Flores. Visitors usually climb Padar's viewpoint before dawn or late in the afternoon, when the low sun lights the ridges and the heat is easier to bear. Tourist boats sail between Padar, Komodo and Rinca on trips of one to three days. In this photo golden hills fold around dark blue bays under a pale sky.

Puzzle tip: the dark blue bays are easy to tell apart from the golden hills; the pale sky is best left for last.
