About Indonesia
On the island of Java stand two great temples of the ninth century: Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, built as a stepped mountain of stone decorated with thousands of carved panels, and Prambanan, a Hindu temple complex with tall, pointed towers.
Bali, the island of the gods, is famous for its temples by the water: Tanah Lot perched on a rock in the sea, and Ulun Danu Beratan on the shore of a mountain lake. Its rice terraces are watered by subak, a traditional system of shared canals recognised as World Heritage. On nearby Nusa Penida, Kelingking Beach lies below a cliff shaped like a dinosaur's head, and further east, the islands of East Nusa Tenggara have quiet beaches fringed with coral.
Komodo National Park, one of the New7Wonders of Nature, protects the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth. On Padar Island a trail climbs to a view of three curving bays, one of them with a beach of pink sand.
