About Crested Terns on Kubbar Island

Every summer, Kubbar and the other small islands off Kuwait become nesting grounds for thousands of seabirds. Lesser and greater crested terns, with their black caps and bright orange or yellow beaks, lay their eggs in shallow scrapes on the bare sand, packed close together. They feed on small fish caught by diving into the sea around the reefs. The colonies are protected, and boats are asked to keep their distance during the breeding season. In this photo, a crowd of terns rests on the sand while others fly overhead.

Puzzle tip: the birds' black caps and orange beaks help to group the pieces; the blue sky and the sand come last.
