About Dotonbori Canal, Osaka

Dotonbori is the heart of Osaka's entertainment district. The canal was dug in the early seventeenth century by a merchant named Yasui Doton, and its banks soon filled with theatres. Today the street beside it is packed with restaurants, food stalls and giant signs shaped like crabs, puffer fish and faces, and it is the best place to taste Osaka's famous street food, from takoyaki octopus balls to okonomiyaki pancakes. This daytime photo looks along the canal between rows of colourful signboards.

Puzzle tip: start with the big colourful signs, then the walkways on both sides, and finish with the canal and the sky.
