About Elephants at a Waterhole, South Luangwa

The Luangwa River is the lifeline of South Luangwa National Park. In the dry season, from about May to October, it shrinks to sandbanks and pools, and animals gather around the last water, which makes this the best time for safaris. An adult elephant can drink well over 100 litres a day and often rolls in mud afterwards to cool down and protect its skin from the sun. Luangwa's elephants were heavily poached for ivory in the 1970s and 1980s, but their numbers have since recovered. In this photo a family of elephants drinks from a muddy pool in hazy evening light.

Puzzle tip: the elephants make a dark band across the middle; the hazy sky and the grass take the longest.
