About Giants' Staircase in the Doge's Palace, Venice

The courtyard of the Doge's Palace reveals a different side of Venice's former seat of government from its familiar waterfront facade. The Giants' Staircase was a ceremonial entrance, guarded at its top by large statues of Mars and Neptune. These figures represented the Venetian Republic's power on land and at sea, while the surrounding arcades connected the palace's rooms and galleries. This photograph centres on the stairway and patterned stonework, with repeated arches and windows showing the ordered structure of the Renaissance courtyard.

Puzzle tip: follow the central staircase and balustrades first, then match the repeated arches by their surrounding stone patterns.
