About Great Mosque of Herat

The Great Mosque of Herat, also called the Friday Mosque, stands on the site of older places of worship and was rebuilt in about 1200 by the Ghurid sultan Ghiyath al-Din, whose tomb is inside. Herat was one of the great cities of the Timurid Empire in the 15th century, a centre of painting, poetry and architecture. The mosque's dazzling tiles were largely restored in the 20th century by a workshop beside the mosque, where craftsmen still cut and glaze tiles by hand to repair them. This photo shows a tall entrance arch framed by two minarets.

Puzzle tip: the minarets give a clear frame, so build them first; the fine tile patterns between them take patience.
