About Green Fields of the Panjshir Valley

The Panjshir Valley runs for more than 100 kilometres through the Hindu Kush, north-east of Kabul, along the fast-flowing Panjshir River. Its name means "Five Lions", after a local legend about five brothers who held back the river's floods. The valley has been known since ancient times for its emeralds, which are still mined in the mountains high above the villages. In summer, terraced fields, orchards and lines of trees make a green ribbon between the bare, steep slopes, as in this photo.

Puzzle tip: the green valley floor and the brown slopes are easy to tell apart; the sky and the far peaks come last.
