About Hintze Hall, Natural History Museum, London

The Natural History Museum in South Kensington opened in 1881 in a building designed by Alfred Waterhouse, sometimes called a cathedral of nature. Its walls and columns are covered with terracotta carvings of plants and animals. The great central space, Hintze Hall, is crossed by a grand staircase beneath a high arched roof, and entry to the museum is free.

Puzzle tip: the arches of the roof repeat across the picture, so look carefully at the shading on each piece.
