About Hvar Town from the Fortress

Hvar is a long island off the Dalmatian coast, and one of the sunniest places in Europe. Its main town spreads around a small harbour below a hilltop fortress built under Venetian rule in the sixteenth century, from where this view looks down over the red roofs to the sea. The town's main square, in front of the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, is one of the largest in Dalmatia, and its theatre, opened in 1612, is one of the oldest public theatres in Europe. Offshore lie the wooded Pakleni Islands, and inland the hills are covered with lavender and olive groves.

Puzzle tip: start with the harbour and the red roofs around it; the islands and the open sea come last.
