About Inside the Colosseum, Rome

The Colosseum was built as a vast amphitheatre for public spectacles in ancient Rome, with seating arranged around an oval arena. Its interior makes the organisation of the building easier to understand than the famous outer wall alone. Beneath the arena, passages and service spaces once supported the performances taking place above, while corridors carried spectators to their seats. This photograph looks across the exposed interior towards successive rows of arches, showing both the surviving structure and the spaces left by centuries of loss and change.

Puzzle tip: trace the curved rows of arches first, then separate the sunlit arena stone from the darker passages.
