About Karlštejn Castle in the Forest

Karlštejn Castle stands on a wooded hill above the Berounka valley, about thirty kilometres south-west of Prague. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, as a safe place for the imperial crown jewels and his collection of holy relics. The most precious rooms are in the great tower at the top: the Chapel of the Holy Cross has walls set with polished semi-precious stones and more than a hundred painted panels of saints by Master Theodoric. The castle rises in steps, from the walls and gates to the tall square tower.

Puzzle tip: start with the castle walls and the square tower; the autumn forest around it takes the most patience.
